Before italia 1990 world cup, nobody who even heard or familliar with this man, salvatore 'toto' schillaci.A guy with a weird nickname, 'toto',that is.After the end of a world cup, football fans around the world certainly take notice. He come to the world cup with just only ONE international cap, yet,he would become the star of the tournament and ended up with a golden boot after scoring 6 goals during the world cup. Also,he was voted player of the tournament and he was in the FIFA world cup 1990 all star team. Not bad for a guy who didn't have enough experience in the world stage. He wasn't the first choice striker, because italian coach azeglio vicini was picking gianluca vialli and andrea carnevale as a starting striker. And of course schillaci fate seems to be just to warming up the bench, but, he prove the coach was wrong and he did score after coming up from a substitute.

Italy first game in the world cup was against austria, schillaci replaced andrea carnevale in the 76 minute, and 2 minutes later, he managed to score a decisive goal and italy win the game 1-0.

Their second game was against USA,which italy win it with a 1-0 scoreline,a goal from a midfielder giuseppe giannini put them in the second round with just one game to spare.Schillaci again came in from the bench, replacing carnevale in the 51st minute.

Semi-finals

Schillaci and baresi in the argentina game

The first semi-final pitted the host nation, Italy, against the world champion, Argentina. 'Totò' Schillaci scored to put Italy ahead in the 17th minute, but Claudio Caniggia equalised midway through the second half, the first player to breach the Italian defence in a World Cup record 517 minutes' play. There were no further goals, but a series of serious fouls saw five yellow cards and a red issued, largely to Argentina: the game went to a shootout which Argentina won 4–3, after Roberto Donadoni and Aldo Serena both had their kicks saved by Sergio Goycochea. Argentina's decisive penalty had been converted by maradona.Italy had to play england for a third place match.

Game highlights

Third place match

The italians putting away their disappointments behind as they will face england in the third place playoff.
The game saw three goals in a fifteen-minute spell. Roberto Baggio opened the scoring after a rare mistake by England's goalkeeper Peter Shilton, in his final game before international retirement, presented a simple opportunity. A header by David Platt levelled the game 10 minutes later but Schillaci was fouled in the penalty area five minutes later, leading to a penalty.A kind baggio then asking Schillaci to take a penalty so that he can be a top scorer of the world cup.Schillaci convert the kick to win him the tournament's Golden Shoe for his six goal tally. Nicola Berti had a goal ruled out minutes later, but the hosts claimed third place.Final score, italy 2,england 1.

After the world cup, schillaci continuing his deadly partnership with baggio at juventus. He
however, didn't make it to the azzurri 1994 world cup squad.Italia 90 was his only world cup that he will ever played, yet,he make a long lasting impression. So thanks, toto, for all the excitement you gave to me as a 11 year old kid at that time,in my first ever world cup  and sitting in front of tv while watching you giving a greatest performance of a lifetime,grazie,toto...
